PODCAST | An Ocean of Sound
In this episode, we chat with STPF alum Heather Spence, a marine biologist and sound artist. She’s also a marine and science advisor in the Department of Energy, where she is exploring the potential for marine renewable energy to power ocean observation systems. For her graduate research, she conducted a groundbreaking sound monitoring program on the MesoAmerican Reef. Heather combined her acoustic recordings from the reef with music – she also performs internationally as a cellist and viola da gambist. Heather shares the activities of the Interagency Working Group on Ocean Sound and Marine Life and the United Nations Ocean Decade’s Maritime Acoustic Environment program. In combining science and art, she hopes to inspire the wider public about ocean biology and conservation.
